FORM 3 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
STUDY THE SECTION IN THE CLASS TEXT ON DATA REPRESENTATION OR LOG ON TO https://peda.net/kenya/css/subjects/computer-studies/form-three/driac2 THEN STUDY THE DOCUMENT BELOW
Data Representation
A type of data is discrete if there are only a finite number of values possible or if there is a space on the number line between each 2 possible values (whole number)
Continuous data makes up the rest of numerical data. This is a type of data that is usually associated with some sort of physical measurement (it has a fractional part).
Human readable document is a document that can be read by humans. Generally printers and monitors produce human readable documents.
Machine readable – any document that can be understood by a computer is referred to a machine readable. Disk drives and tape drives produce machine readable copies.
Humans use the decimal number system in everyday life (comprise of ten digits, 0-9 and it is called decimal or denary system or Base 10).
The computer use the binary number system comprised of two digits 0 or 1. It is called the Binary Number System or Base Two.
Octal number system – comprise of 8 digits (0-7) BASE EIGHT
Hexadecimal number system comprise of 16 characters (0-9 digits and letters A, B, C, D, E, F) BASE SIXTEEN
Types of Numbers
Natural numbers are numbers such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5……The set of whole numbers with zero.
Integers are negative and positive whole numbers; they have no fractional parts -2, -1, 1, 2, 3 …
Real numbers are numbers with a fractional part example 5.25, 10.3698
The magnitude of a number refers to how large or how small a number is. It does not depend on the sign. The numbers -5 and +5 both have the same magnitude - FIVE.
TERMS ASSOCIATED WITH STORAGE
§  bit is a unit of storage that has two possible values, 0 and 1. It is the smallest unit of data a computer can process. The word bit comes from two words binary and digit (Bit)
§  byte is a group of eight bits
§  character can be a letter, number or a symbol
§  nibble group of 4 bits
§  kilobyte is approximately one thousand characters
§  megabyte is approximately one million characters
§  gigabyte is approximately one billion characters
§  Terabyte is approximately one trillion characters

Classify each set of data as discrete or continuous.
1) The number of suitcases lost by an airline.
2) The height of corn plants.
3) The number of ears of corn produced.
4) The number of green M&M's in a bag.
5) The time it takes for a car battery to die.
6) The production of tomatoes by weight.
AN ASSIGNMENT WILL BE SENT TO COMPLETE IN THE NEXT POST.
