Textiles, Clothing and Fashion Form 2

Textiles, Clothing and Fashion

 Grenville Secondary School

Textiles Clothing and Fashion Form 3 (Hilary 2021)

Week 3: January 18th-22nd

Instructions: All notes should be transferred from this document to your Textiles Clothing and Fashion notebook which will be checked on your next visit to school.

Topic: Methods of Fabric Construction

Notes

Methods of fabric construction:

·       Weaving

·       Knitting

·       Crocheting

·       Bonding

·       Felting

Weaving- the interlocking of wrap and weft threads on a loom.

Types of weaving

1.    Plain/ even weave- it is made by alternately interlocking wrap and weft yarns in an over 1 under 1 pattern throughout the entire width of the fabric.

Examples of fabric made by the plain weaving method: Calico, cheese cloth, gingham, polyester cotton, 100% polyester (tetrex).

2.    Twill weave fabrics have diagonal ridges across the surface of the fabric.

Characteristics of Twill weave Fabrics

1.    Diagonal ridges across the surface of the fabric.

2.    Have obvious right and wrong side.

3.    Fabrics are strong and softer than plain weave fabric.

4.    Fabrics crease less than plain weave fabric and do not soil easily, but are difficult to clean.

5.    Fabrics become shinny when worn frequently.

6.    Fabrics stretch and drape well, due to the open structure created by the construction but lose shape easily.

Examples of twill weave fabric: gaberdine, drill, sheeting, denim

Assignment: Using the YouTube videos in the link below create a plain weave and twill weave using paper and glue then mount a sample in your note book.

Instructions: All notes should be transferred from this document to your Textiles Clothing and Fashion notebook which will be checked on your next visit to school.

Topic: Care Labels

Notes

A Care label is a tag that is permanently attached to textile articles. It gives instructions on how to care the article or item.

·       Wash tub- gives washing instructions.

·       Triangle- gives instructions on bleaching.

·       Square-gives drying instructions.

·       Iron- gives ironing instructions.

·       Circle- gives dry cleaning instructions.

Assignment: Draw and label all the care symbols that fall under each category mentioned above.

Week 3 Topic: States of Matter – Read carefully, then use your notes answer the questions

1.     Diffusion and Osmosis are TWO processes used as proof for the particulate theory of matter.
a.      Define diffusion
b.     Define osmosis
c.      Identify TWO (2) real world examples of diffusion taking place.
d.     Describe ONE (1) situation in which osmosis is taking place
e.      What is the relation between diffusion and osmosis? (How are they similar; how are they different?)

2.     Solids, liquids and gases are three states of matter which exist depending on the amount of movement energy the particles of matter have.
a.      What is movement energy called? Hint: it begins with k.
b.     Aside from the energy of the particles, what is responsible for the existence of the three states of matter Hint: forces of…
c.      How does the shape of a solid differ to that of a liquid?
d.     Explain why gases are easy to compress but solids are harder to compress. Hint word: space
e.      Explain why both liquids and gases have variable shape however the liquid has a definite volume while the gas has a variable volume. Hint: energy, space and forces of…

Week 3: Chemical Bonding – Read carefully then Answer ALL of the following questions:

1.     Excerpt from Chemistry for CSEC by Nelson Thornes: “When atoms bond with each other, usually only the outermost electron shells are involved in the process. Atoms combine with each other to attain a more stable electronic configuration. The noble gases are stable atoms because of their electronic configuration…in their electronic configuration, their outermost shell is full.” Explain why atoms bond with one another.  2 marks

2.     Compare ionic bonding to covalent bonding. 2 marks

3.     Calcium forms an ionic bond with fluorine to form a compound: 2 marks
a.      Give the name of the compound
b.     Give the formula of the compound

4.     Research the term “delocalized electron” then explain how it applies to metallic bonding. 2 marks

5.     Explain why metals are electrical conductors. 2 marks

Human and Social Biology Form 3

Form 3 HUMAN AND SOCIAL BIOLOGY Trinity
Week 3 Topic: Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport – Answer ALL the following questions:

1.     Suggest why diffusion through cell surface membranes is said to be passive process.

2.     Blood consists of blood cells and a liquid portion known as plasma. Both components of the blood may be concentrated or dilute with various substances at any given point in time.

a.      Define the term concentrated.
b.     Define the term dilute
c.      Which would be more harmful – our blood plasma becoming more dilute or more concentrated than our red blood cells?

3.     Make a table to compare the processes of diffusion and osmosis.

4.     Explain why energy is needed for active transport.

1.     Write an argument for OR against cigarette smoking. In your argument include:
a.      A brief description of TWO (2) benefits/harms of cigarette smoking
b.     Reasons why the benefits out-weigh the harms OR why the harms out-weigh the benefits
c.      At least TWO (2) pieces of statistics or general information to support your point of view on cigarette smoking.  State the source of your information.
